Did you know that atopic dermatitis is the cause of 30% of dermatology consultations? It is non-contagious but a very disabling skin disease. If you live with eczema or dermatitis, you know what it’s like to search for relief from red and itchy skin.

You’ve probably already tried a variety of creams and products. Unfortunately, some items can leave your skin feeling drier and even more irritated.

What is atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, is a disease that affects around 4% of the French population. It is the second most common skin disease, just after acne and ahead of psoriasis. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. It develops preferentially in infants and children, but can persist and sometimes even appear in adolescents and adults.

Experts think that eczema passes from parents to kids through genes. It is characterized by dryness of the skin associated with eczema-type lesions (redness and itching, blisters, oozing and crusts) which often progress through flare-ups. Atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema is not contagious; in other words, you can't "catch" it! You cannot spread eczema through person-to-person contact.

What are the symptoms of atopic dermatitis?

The symptoms of atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis are:

• Dry skin.

• Itchy skin

• Skin rash

• Bumps on your skin

• Thick, leathery patches of skin

• Flaky, scaly or crusty skin

• Swelling

Then, these lesions often give way to scabs which gradually disappear with treatment.

Who is affected by atopic dermatitis?

Unfortunately, atopic eczema can affect anyone, from infants to older adults. In infants, infant eczema or atopic dermatitis in infants is most often present on the face, legs, arms and back. Wet areas such as the neck folds and the back of the ears are often affected. In babies, atopic eczema affects fleshy areas such as the arms and stomach but also the face, cheeks and forehead. As babies drool, regurgitate and get dirty easily, it is necessary to clean them often. This repeated rubbing can lead to patches of eczema on your face. In children, the hands, feet and nose are often spared from atopic dermatitis. From the age of 12, the head, neck, arms, legs and hands are often the parts of the body most affected by this skin disease. Atopic eczema appears in the folds of the elbows and knees as well as on the hands and face (around the mouth, eyelids, behind the ears). People who suffer from eczema most often have very dry skin and their hands show cracks, especially in winter. In the majority of cases, atopic eczema tends to disappear during adolescence.

What are the causes of atopic dermatitis?

Why do some people suffer from eczema and not others? The term “atopy” designates a hereditary predisposition to develop an allergy, the translation of which can be dermatitis, but also asthma or allergic rhinitis. We note that more than 50% of children whose parents suffer from atopic dermatitis are themselves affected by this skin problem.

Atopic dermatitis is caused in part by an abnormality of the skin barrier which no longer plays its defensive role associated with an inappropriate response from the immune system as well as a failure of a protein responsible for hydrating the skin. Disturbances of the skin barrier promote the penetration of irritating substances, bacteria or allergens into the dermis. This deficiency of the skin barrier and an abnormality of the immune response. The causes of atopic dermatitis are multiple.

Can atopic dermatitis be prevented?

To date, no means of prevention have been found to avoid suffering from atopic dermatitis. You can nevertheless follow our advice for taking care of atopic skin. For people with contact eczema, however, simply do not expose the skin to the elements that cause this allergic reaction. We have observed that people who regularly moisturize their skin have less frequent eczema flare-ups, because healthy, hydrated skin is better able to defend itself against allergens. We therefore advise you to use products adapted to your skin type during your shower while not hesitating to use a moisturizing cream throughout the day. Of course, avoid unsuitable shower gels or soaps which will tend to dry out your skin.

Do not hesitate to protect the parts of your body that are in the open air, especially in winter or if you live in areas with regularly polluted air. Last point of interest for atopic skin, remember to protect your skin from all attacks. In particular, components of clothing such as wool or certain synthetics contribute to irritating your skin. Choose textiles made from softer fibers that your skin will tolerate, such as cotton or linen.

What are the treatments to treat atopic dermatitis?

What shower gels are suitable for atopic skin? Using products with a neutral pH and a soft texture whose composition will not further attack your skin is essential. Avoid scented soaps which will irritate you. When you dry your skin after a shower, be careful not to damage it further and dab rather than rub. There are a multitude of products available but often these products are not 100% natural and not very efficient. This is why we developed the Zematopic cleansing gel, which, with its patented and 100% natural formula, gently cleanses and moisturizes from the first use. The cleansing gel can be applied to both the body and the hair daily.

What are the best creams for atopic dermatitis?

There are 2 types of cream to relieve eczema: prescription creams and non-prescription creams. Most of the time, the creams prescribed to you by your doctor contain cortisone. However, there is a natural solution that is just as effective to fight eczema without cortisone. We have therefore also created a cream that treats eczema, hydrates and soothes all parts of the body. Our Zematopic® body eczema care cream has been specially formulated to naturally heal atopic eczema without cortisone. Its formula is patented and its effectiveness is proven.

Formulated with plantago lanceolata known for its anti-inflammatory properties, it will also provide a protective film to maintain hydration in atopic skin. Furthermore, when atopic dermatitis affects areas as sensitive as the mucous membranes of the mouth for example, the miraculous Zematopic® face cream is perfectly indicated for adults. Natural and with a liquid texture, it applies easily without a shiny or greasy effect. Each time the skin is exposed to water, it is recommended to apply cream so that the skin does not dry out, regains suppleness and is protected from future attacks.
